Mercedes-AMG SL goes topless in new motorsport-bred PureSpeed roadster

Dec 12, 2024 by admin

Mercedes-AMG is putting its unique SL-based PureSpeed concept into limited production, with the German carmaker now detailing the racing-inspired, windscreen-less roadster.

Unveiled at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed previewed what will now become a limited-run model, with just 250 examples to be made in 2025.

The first model in Mercedes-AMG’s Mythos series, not much has changed from the concept to production, with the PureSpeed ditching the SL’s windscreen, A-pillar, and folding soft-top roof mechanism.

Instead, a Formula 1-style ‘halo’ bisects the cabin, minimising the loss of structural rigidity while also providing additional interior lighting, thanks to ambient LED strips mounted on its underside.

There are further tributes to Mercedes’ racing heritage in the two ‘scoops’ which sit behind the driver and passenger, which pay homage to the 300 SLR which won the 1955 Mille Miglia in the hands of Stirling Moss with navigator Denis Jenkinson.

While the PureSpeed is finished as standard in Mystic Silver Magno paint to reflect its Silver Arrow heritage, the car pictured features the optional motorsport styling package in Le Mans red and graphite grey.

The motorsport styling package also features the number ‘10’ on the front wheel-arch, commemorating the Mercedes car which won the 1924 Targa Florio in red paintwork – a departure from the German marque’s usual silver in a bid to keep the Italian spectators onside.

A set of unique 21-inch forged aluminium wheels with carbon-fibre covers fill the guards, reminiscent of those found on the company’s flagship One hypercar which also inspired the PureSpeed’s front bumper design.

The PureSpeed also gains AMG GT63 Pro-inspired aerodynamic aids, which are said to improve downforce while also compensating for its lack of a roof.

Mercedes-AMG was previously tight-lipped on what would power the PureSpeed, but it’s now confirmed to use the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from the SL63 4Matic+, which produces 430kW of power and 800Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

It misses out on the flagship SL63 S E-Performance’s plug-in hybrid V8 with 600kW/1080Nm.

With a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.6 seconds, a top speed of 315km/h and no windscreen, Mercedes-AMG offers occupants protection from the elements with a pair of “aerodynamically optimised helmets”, made specifically for the PureSpeed.

They’re not only colour-matched to the roadster but also include an intercom system – no yelling required.

Also in the cabin is a unique colour scheme and a dashboard-mounted IWC Schaffhausen clock, however it doesn’t stray too far from the SL formula outside of these changes.

Mercedes-AMG hasn’t yet detailed a price for the PureSpeed or announced if it’ll be sold in right-hand drive. It’s expected to incur a premium compared to the SL63 4Matic+, which in Australia starts from $380,000 before on-road costs.
