Volkswagen expects ID. Buzz will outsell all its vans, people movers

Dec 12, 2024 by admin

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles claims its newly launched ID. Buzz people mover and ID. Buzz Cargo van combined will be its second best-selling model range in Australia, behind only the Amarok ute.

If this is correct, it’ll mean the electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz/ID. Buzz Cargo will outsell the combustion-powered Caddy, Multivan, Caravelle, Transporter and Crafter ranges.

Until the end of November this year, Volkswagen has sold a total of 7920 Amaroks in Australia, and the next best-selling vehicles from the commercial vehicle brand are the Caddy and Transporter with 813 sales each.

While Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed any annual supply volume for the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo, the company said it has almost 8000 people who have registered their interest on the website.

Volkswagen Group Australia director of commercial vehicles, Ryan Davies, also confirmed supply for the ID. Buzz range is going to be “pretty good”.

“So the first batch of arrivals come in a block, and then … because the US market is launching at the same time, we’ve had probably one or two weeks off,” said Mr Davies.

“Then we’ll start to get really consistent production for the remainder of the year.

“So we’re not seeing any challenges around supply for [ID.] Buzz or [ID.] Buzz Cargo.

“Where we might have some limitations is in the two-tone paint, because that’s a very popular option. But again, something that has to be balanced across the world.

“And of course, with the GTX variant, we’re expecting that to be very highly sought after globally, and I guess, our ability to secure that model will be limited at first, but improved by the end of the year.”

Volkswagen claims the ID. Buzz will be a “segment buster” in Australia, appealing to couples looking for something nostalgic, families looking for a practical alternative to an electric SUV, as well as fleet customers.

“So we talk about this car as being a little bit of a segment buster, because it will appeal to a diverse range of customers in the Australian market,” continued Mr Davies.

“We’re certain that it’s going to warm to the hearts of Australians, and plenty of people have already shown interest and will continue to show interest in it.”

Volkswagen projects 55-60 per cent of buyers will opt for the ID. Buzz people mover, with the remaining 40-45 per cent of buyers opting for the ID. Buzz Cargo van.

While Volkswagen couldn’t provide a projected split between the five-seat short-wheelbase (SWB) ID. Buzz and the seven-seat long-wheelbase (LWB), Mr Davies said more people have registered their interest of the former.

“However, in practice, we believe that probably the biggest interest long-term is going to be on [the] seven-seater, especially when you consider it’s only 300mm longer, and you’re getting that practicality of seven seats,” said Mr Davies.

All versions of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, including the ID. Buzz Cargo, are currently priced under the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold, meaning for novated leasing buyers they’re exempt from fringe benefits tax (FBT).

The range opens at $79,990 before on-roads for the ID. Buzz Cargo SWB, while the ID. Buzz Pro SWB starts at $87,990 before on-roads, and the ID. Buzz Pro LWB starts at $91,290 before on-roads.

The forthcoming ID. Buzz GTX LWB however is above the LCT threshold, with a starting price of $109,990 before on-roads. It’s currently due to launch locally in the second quarter of 2025.
